The Power of the Breath

Tyson is a 12-year-old boxer. He’s is part of a large family that is busy and sometimes chaotic.  He’s lovable, but also stubborn. When Beth walks him on leash, he stops when he wants to go home or head in a different direction.

It’s a battle Beth has endured for years, and she always gives in. Tyson is too big and strong for her to win this argument.

I mentioned to Beth that she could look at this as a life lesson about herself. Tyson is showing her something she can learn. To become more powerful and determined, not to be pulled in a way that doesn’t suit her. Beth’s true nature is led by her heartfelt emotions. It’s wonderful to have a kind and open heart, but it’s equally important to have deep inner strength and determination.

I showed Beth the difference between shallow breathing and breathing deep into her center. I taught her a technique to breathe more deeply. Beth, having yoga training, caught on and felt this sensation right away. She felt her inner strength and a connection to her core. Even her voice changed.

Later that day she walked Tyson. He stopped and wanted to change directions. Beth focused on her breath, and told Tyson they were going to continue the walk. He immediately followed her without a struggle.

That’s the power of the breath!
